Equity, Diversity & Inclusion matters more than ever, and that’s why It’s under attack. Pt 1

Updated: Apr 3

Let’s talk. Because if you’ve been paying attention, you’ve probably noticed that Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) is under fire (and yes, we are capitalising each word in the term ‘EDI’ throughout this blog because we need to put some respect back on its name). From US elections to government policies to public corporate backpedalling, it seems like every other day someone is out here trying to convince us that Equity, Diversity & Inclusion is ‘divisive’ or ‘no longer needed.’ And yet, here we are in 2025, still seeing discrimination, exclusion, and systemic barriers playing out before our eyes. We know Equity, Diversity and Inclusion is necessary and not going anywhere in reality because those of us from marginalised communities and our allies will continue to fight for justice regardless of the demonisation of the term.

To assume that we live in a world where Equity, Diversity and Inclusion is not necessary or essential is not even a possibility especially given the current climate. The fact that there’s a coordinated effort to dismantle Equity, Diversity and Inclusion efforts tells you everything you need to know: Equity Diversity and Inclusion works. It challenges the status quo, shifts power, and forces accountability. It enables access to those who historically have not had it and aims to bring justice to the playing field. And that makes some people uncomfortable and a lot of people who are benefiting from these structures scared.

Looking beneath the surface

The backlash against Equity, Diversity and Inclusion is planned. It’s part of a wider push to maintain power structures that benefit a select few. Think about it, when organisations and institutions finally start to take inclusion seriously, it means redistributing resources, amplifying marginalised voices, and making space at the table. That threatens the privileged, so they label Equity Diversity and Inclusion as ‘woke’ and ‘divisive’ they defund initiatives, and they spread misinformation about what Equity, Diversity and Inclusion actually is because heaven forbid we reach a world where the few at the top have to share access and resources with others from marginalised backgrounds.

Let’s be clear, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion is not about exclusion or favouritism. It’s about breaking down the barriers that have excluded people for generations. It’s about equity, not just equality. It’s about creating environments where everyone can thrive, not just wealthy, white, straight, abled bodied people. It’s about working towards justice where historical barriers are removed and no longer disproportionally affecting marginalised groups.
